How I Met My husband!
I just graduated Community College with my Associates Degree and was preparing to head into my junior year of college! I had picked my 4 year school, Rutgers-Camden Campus, because the train station was close to my boyfriends house and was excited that my commute from the train to my house (I lived with him!) wouldn’t be long.
Welp, we broke up 2 months before the first day of class and that put a bump in my perfect commuting plan. Now I was then driving 30 minutes from Lawrenceville to Bordentown to jump on the Riverline to Camden, NJ. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Camden, it is deemed one of the unsafest (is that a word?) cities in the US. I could probably write a book about all of the things I encountered while commuting…(maybe that would be a good post? :P) but I digress.
Nonetheless, each day I got off the train and headed to my classes. I was there from 8am-6pm most nights. I had no friends and this is where I truly started to navigate who I was becoming in my early 20’s.
I found out I loved having lunch alone. I thrived off of time management. I spent a lot of my time in the library doing homework between classes and really made the most of the time. And I never, ever, ever left campus!
While at home one day, I was taking a test online. We used a network called “Sakai” to take tests, and my computer crashed in the middle of it. Very unlike me, I was procrastinating and was taking this test at 2am, and had to be up in 4 hours to catch the next train. So my computer crashes and I start to panic. I get the PC restarted, get back on Sakai and see a big fat “0” FAILED next to my grade. GULP. So I did what any college kid would do and looked who else was up procrastinating with me:
Johnathan White
Dennis Hill
Great. So I copied and pasted their names into facebook with no hit on Johnathan. There was Dennis. So I messaged him,
“Hi, you don’t know me but we have class together and I just failed my test. Can you help me?”
“Hi, I know who you are. We actually have two classes together.”
….. “Oh, cool. So can you help me?”
“Do you live on campus? We have parties here. Here’s my number.”
Slick, right?
Well like I mentioned, I had no friends at this time and was like, well what the heck. So I texted him. He finally told me “just talk to the professor about it tomorrow morning!”
So the morning comes, I’m in class, exhausted and now so so nervous because I failed when Dennis walks RIGHT BY ME. At first I start laughing because I’m like “is this dude serious? He said he noticed me in two classes, we were texting last night and now he WALKS BY ME?” So I get his attention and he sits next to me. 7 minutes into this class, he turns to me and says, “I’m going to get breakfast. Are you coming with me?” I say, “ummm no, I don’t skip class (on a scholarship!), I failed my test and I have to talk to the professor after class. With that, he got up, said “I’ll wait 5 minutes for you at the bottom of the steps, I know an awesome place.” AND LEFT.
So yeah, I got up after 4 minutes of internal conflict and walked down the 4 flights of stairs where he was waiting for me. He took me to a place called Friends Cafe on Friends Street in Camden (Off campus!) and I was so so happy to finally have a FRIEND (silly naive me..right?)
We parted ways after that – he went to his apartment and I went onto class. Night class came and can you believe this dude legit walked past me again like he didn’t see me? So I said (loudly) “Ummm are you kidding me? You aren’t going to sit with me?” The entire class was cracking up. I super embarrassed him, lol, and he wrote about this in his vows, but essentially from there on out we always hung out.
Again, Silly naive Jamie just thought we were friends! Then he started calling me on the weekends to talk 0_O haha!
Needless to say, the rest is history. We started dating on January 23, 2011. Got engaged Decembe 25, 2013, Married September 19, 2015 & had our two babies in 2017 & 2018.
What do you like most about our story? I would love to hear your feedback!
